1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have. Love doesn’t strut, Doesn’t have a swelled head, Doesn’t force itself on others, Isn’t always “me first,” Doesn’t fly off the handle, Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others, Doesn’t revel when others grovel, Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, Puts up with anything, Trusts God always, Always looks for the best, Never looks back, But keeps going to the end.

There's so much in these verses, it's more than can be covered in one blog post. But each line is worth looking at carefully.

My favorites are the last four lines:
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.

If we just lived by those four lines, our lives would be complete and we would make an incredible impact on those we touch.

Love Trusts God Always

God faithfully loves us and wants the best for us. If we truly believe that, then why is it so hard to trust Him? I think it's because we have been disappointed by others' human failings and we tend to think God is like every human we know.

But that's not the case. Jesus came to earth fully man and fully God (a difficult concept to grasp, I know). While He experienced life as a man, He is incapable of sin and so can't disappoint us. He has made promises to us that He has and will fulfill.

Love Always Looks for the Best

God always looks for the best in us. He really does! And He wants us to do the same with others.

There are people in our lives that we just don't like. That crabby old lady down the street that is always scowling. Or that annoying young up-and-comer at work.  Or even the smelly guy behind you in the check-out lane.

We can spend our energy obsessing over the things we don't like about them. Or we can use that same energy to find positive things about them. I promise that you'll find something positive about even the most unlikeable person if you just try. I mean, if God can do it, so can we!

Love Never Looks Back

The really beautiful thing about God is that He is eager to forgive and forget our sins. We may obsess about mistakes we've made in our past, but as soon as we ask for His forgiveness, He's forgotten all about it.

We should do the same with the people in our lives. God wants us to forgive others. Do you know why? Because holding anger, resentment, even hate inside isn't good for us. It eats us up, messes with our self esteem, keeps us from moving forward.

As hard as it is, we should always forgive those who have wronged us. And then we need to forget. Don't look back.

Love Keeps Going to the End

As the hymn says:

My God loves me,
his faithful love endures.
And I will live like a child
held in love secure.

God's love will never end. You may stumble, but if you love God, He will help you back up and keep you on the right path.

We've all had friends turn their backs on us because we've disappointed them. But God will never do that. His love is everlasting.
